Understanding Varicose Veins

A vein is a blood vessel that carries blood throughout the body. Normally, these veins do their job like a well oiled pump but sometimes these veins break down, causing the flow of blood to become abnormal.

As for vitamins C and E, they are the ones your body cannot synthesize so you must give your body a new supply daily. The beauty of them is that what your body does not use is simply sluffed off in urine and the next day you need a new supply. Remember also that vitamins C and E are each very powerful anti-oxidants. For a very few people, however, it is possible to develop vitamin C or E poisoning ' not serious in most cases and dropping your intake cures it quickly. This reaction is extremely rare, not more than 1 instance in 10,000 cases (I have personally only heard of it, and never known a case firsthand, yet I have shared the above with literally thousands of people already).

varicose vein specialistThe most important varicose vein vitamins you should take regularly to treat varicose veins are A, C, E, B6, and K. In addition, you should also take bioflavoniods and fiber as they are also important for your overall health.

Exercise The most important part of non medical treatment for varicose veins is exercise. In fact it is a vital part of maintaining a healthy and balanced body. Exercise gets the blood flowing normally which helps greatly with blood circulation. Besides aerobic exercise, yoga has also been noted as another important aspect of exercise which can be used to treat varicose veins.

Treatment of varicose veins an be as simple as wearing elasticised compression stockings, controlling your weight, undertaking a moderate exercise program, avoiding prolonged periods of standing, and elevating the legs whenever possible.

Another diagnostic procedure available is the use of ultrasound to examine the blood flow in the major arteries and veins in the arms and legs. This procedure is known as Doppler's ultrasonography. Ultrasound is high frequency sound waves that echo off the body. It is performed by applying a water soluble gel to the body and then passing a hand held device known as a transducer over the area.

Another method of treatment is called compression sclerotherapy. In this procedure, points of abnormal flow from deep to superficial veins are located and permanently obliterated by the injection of a substance called a sclerosant. Application of continuous pressure then restores the pumping capacity of the vein.

Let me pre-amble this article with a statement I have made at least a couple of times in other health-related articles of recent vintage. We are all unique individuals, each chemically different from one another, even though many of us are close enough to another that we can generally 'group' ourselves into several 'similar groupings'. Therefore, what works well for one person will probably work as well for everyone in that general grouping, will work but not as well for another general grouping, will do nothing good nor bad for another grouping, and will be bad for yet another grouping.

I have had varicose veins in my ankles since I was a teenager. I began taking massive doses of vitamin C ' 2000 units a day ' and vitamin E ' 500 units a day, 2 or 3 times a week, about 1966 when I met a girl who said she took 1000 units of vitamin C daily, sometimes more, because her doctor prescribed it to help her varicose veins. Yes, I still have terrible varicose veins in my ankles but they don't hurt and they apparently don't impede my circulation.

Massage There are several different massage techniques to treat varicose veins. Massage works very well because it makes your skin tender and thus prevent you from getting varicose veins.

I am sure most of us have, or know someone who has the enlarged, twisted, superficial veins in their lower legs and ankles known as varicose veins.

However, non medical treatments are more effective for milder cases of varicose veins. Some of these treatments are: 1) Acupuncture and Acupressure

These stockings tighten the most at the ankle, and gradually deliver less pressure as it stretches over the knee and towards the thigh. This results in forcing of blood along its natural course despite the damage to the veins. These stockings are not everlasting however, and even the prescription stockings will need to be replaced after a few months of regular use.

Side Effects Of Bilberry There are no any serious side effects of Bilberry but it may cause gastrointestinal upset, dizziness, or headaches. Also, people taking drugs or herbs that lower blood pressure, lower blood sugar, cause diarrhea, or thin the blood, should take Bilberry with caution???it could increase the effects of these herbs and medications.

In severe cases, a surgical procedure called stripping and ligation may be considered necessary. During this surgery, one or more incisions are made over the varicose veins, and the vein is tied off (ligated). If several valves in the vein and the vein itself are heavily damaged, the vein (or the diseased part of the vein) is usually removed (stripped). An incision is made below the varicose vein, a flexible instrument is threaded up the vein to the first incision, and the vein is grasped and removed.

Compression Stockings For a person suffering from varicose veins temporarily, such as while pregnant, compression can be used as a non medical treatment . This might also be true for someone that is mildly affected with varicose veins.

Uses Of Bilberry Bilberry leaf has been used for diabetes, stomach problems, arthritis, blood circulation problems, and heart problems Bilberry contains anthocyanosides, compounds that benefit the circulatory system. Bilberry strengthens blood vessels and connective tissue, builds strong capillaries, improves circulation, and may help to control the formation of blood clots, varicose veins, and hemorrhoids. Additionally, the compounds (anthocyanosides) in Bilberry help eyes adapt to light changes and enhances night vision. Tannin, found in dried Bilberry berries, helps to control diarrhea and related intestinal inflammation (astringent properties). Extract of Bilberry protects the stomach against digestive acids because it stimulates the production of stomach mucus. The leaves of the Bilberry are high in chromium - important to regulate blood sugar levels. This may benefit people who are diabetic or hypoglycemic.

Benefits Of Billberry The Bilberry pigments decrease capillary permeability and fragility, and the tendency to bruise easily. Therefore,Bilberry Extract are useful for the treatment of microcirculatory disorders, such as varicose veins, venous insufficiency, and hemorrhoids. Bilberry preparations are also useful for degenerating eye conditions such as glaucoma, age-related macular degeneration, cataracts, and diabetic retinopathy.

Bilberry promotes good circulation and strengthens artery walls, and thus may be an effective treatment for atherosclerosis, a condition in which plaque builds up on the artery walls and blocks the flow of oxygenated blood to the heart. Bilberry's anti-inflammatory properties also work to reduce the overall inflammation, including inflammation of the gums, that has been linked with heart disease.

The following active constituents have been found in Bilberry: ericolin, arbutin, beta-amyrin, nonacosane, and anthocyanosides. Anthocyanosides are a type of flavonoid which causes the deep blue-red color of many berries. This may produce many of the secondary benefits such as lowering of blood pressure, reduction of clots, reducing varicosities and bruising, reversing poor blood supply, and improving blood supply. Bilberry is used in Europe before surgery to prevent excessive bleeding and hemorrhaging. A recent German medical journal reports bilberry effective in reducing excessive bleeding by 71% (Lietti). Bilberry also thins the blood by inhibiting platelet adhesion (Bottecchia). This combination of actions 1. improving capillary strength, 2. reduction of capillary leakage, and 3. blood thinning results in improved blood flow and may reduce clotting-related health risks.

During the early 1980's I began taking amino acid supplements and quickly learned I am allergic to the amino acid supplements. I developed the same reaction to amino acid supplements as I did to tetracycline and geocyllin. But also during the 1980's, due to a radical change of diet because I was goutish (I took medication to control gout from 1977 thru 1980, for 3 ' years), I began taking zinc and selenium supplements, 50 mg each once a week, along with my vitamin C and E.

If you are worried about having your varicose veins removed by surgery, fear not because there are many non-medical and natural remedies for treating varicose veins now available. As the world moves toward looking for healthier and more natural choices when it comes to our bodies, doctors and researchers continue to find more ways to offer natural and non-medical treatment for various ailments.

Beginning about the mid 1970s I began noticing that I never seemed to catch colds, in fact hadn't had one in years. This pattern continued. And while the flu was going around and every one around me was getting sick I still only caught flu about once every 5 or more years. Others caught it every year.

Acupuncture and Acupressure They are effective, but only for the appearance of the veins. Both these procedures will help to keep the veins from worsening, but unfortunately cannot help them to disappear completely.

Healthy Diet As with anything that is health related diet plays a big part in treating varicose veins. Make sure that you include plenty of fiber, vitamins A, B, C and E, as well as zinc in your diet. These are just some of the elements that will help you in treating varicose veins.

Bilberry contains flavonoids called anthocyanosides, which are found largely in dark-skinned fruits, and act as potent antioxidants in the body. These anthocyanosides are thought to be at least part of the reason that Bilberry is effective in treating such eye disorders such as macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, and cataracts. In one Italian study, a combination of bilberry extracts and vitamin E stopped the progression of cataracts in 97 percent of the study participants. Bilberries are very rich in natural antioxidants such as flavonoids and phenolic acids. As an anti oxidant Bilberry is great in the defense against cell damaging agents called free radicals. Free radicals occur naturally in the body and are most commonly produced from simple oxygen exposure. An other common cause of free radical formation is exposure to carbon monoxide from such things as pollution and cigarette smoke. Anti oxidants remove free radicals from the body and help keep cells healthy. Too many free radicals can cause mutation of cells, which can lead to such things as cancer. Using Bilberry with other anti oxidants such as vitamin C and E and performing regular exercise can help keep your body purged of free radicals and may drastically help reduce the risk of such mutations.

The anthocyanidin pigments, along with the flavonoids and other antioxidants, help protect and relax blood vessels, inhibit blood clot formation, and improve microvascular blood flow, thereby diminishing angina events. Many of the antioxidants in Bilberry are more potent than vita min E and can inhibit the oxidation of LDL cholesterol, as well as promoting vasorelaxation. Preliminary experiments reveal that Bilberry extract also possess antimicrobial and anticancer properties and may help in the healing of wounds and ulcers.

For Christmas of 1996 I determined to begin taking the zinc and selenium daily beginning about mid-November and on thru Christmas. The next time I got sick in any way was for Christmas 2001, when I was running a fever alternating with chills. But'..no one around me could tell I was sick, I didn't have the sniffles or a red nose, nor did I lose my voice. To all outward appearances I looked and acted completely healthy. And while those around me catching this particular flu bug were sick for up to a week, mine lasted only two days and I was over it. Since the 1995 illness, 2001 is the only time I have been sick during the Christmas season, yet I meet thousands of children and adults and must come into contact with every possible contagious germ out there.

What works for me may work for you; but the idea is sound. You may have to determine your own particular health needs, vary this regimen to suit your body requirements. But when you do find the correct supplements you, too, will enjoy the good health I enjoy. And for most people, zinc and selenium are not only the building blocks of life but cancer fighting elements as well.

For people who are suffering with a more severe case of varicose veins, compression stockings can be prescribed by their doctors. These stockings can often be purchased at a medical supply store or at a full service pharmacy. The compression stockings for varicose vein treatment range in price from about $50 to $100, depending on the size and style.

What follows works well for me; it may work exactly the same for you, maybe even better. And it may be that my program will only work for you if you make a minor modification; or for another person if you make major modifications.

Just about any 100 percent organic greens supplement will do. However, they are rare. I have only found one that is truly 100 percent organic, and that is Bio 88+ (Plus). It is derived from both ancient and modern grains (such as wheat-grass) and from tropical and temperate zone fruits and vegetables. It is totally vegetarian based from 88 certified organic food sources plus it provides 15 proprietary probiotics. Email Loring directly for a .pdf brochure on Bio 88+ (Plus).

If in doubt, or if you have questions, you should consult your physician and, if possible, consult a second physician for a possible different opinion. The author does not bear any responsibility for your decisions nor for the outcome of your actions based upon those decisions.

So, to summarize, during the year I take 2000 units of vitamin C daily, 500 units of vitamin E weekly and 50 mg of selenium and zinc weekly. Since 2001 I have added 50 mg of magnesium and potassium weekly. And, during the Christmas season, beginning in mid-November, I up this to 50 mg of zinc, selenium and magnesium daily, at least 5 days a week, and potassium at least twice weekly.

There may also be a brownish discolouration of the skin which is known as stasis pigmentation. This is caused by a breakdown of blood cells leading to a leakage in the affected area and is common in people who have suffered from this condition for a lengthy period of time.

And I learned in the late 1960's, that I had a bad reaction to Vitamins A, B (all), D, in fact, every vitamin supplement except C and E. What they did was raise my blood pressure over a period of use, say a month. My blood pressure would shoot up from 120/70 to 165/95 and take 2-3 months off the vitamins to return to normal. The Doctors confirmed this as an allergic reaction.

I learned back in the '50's and 60's that every time I took a flu shot I got the flu ' three times, in fact. Once immediately after the shot, again after 3 months, and a third time after 6 months. Every year, every flu shot, the same pattern repeated. In 1967 I quit taking flu shots and I have caught the flu since then about once every 5-6 years.

Even if you already have varicose veins, the massage can still work wonders for you. It can help to get rid of varicose veins that are already on your skin if you suffer from mild varicose veins.

2) Aromatherapy 3) Hydrotherapy 4) Compression Stockings 5) Massage 6) Exercise 7) Healthy Diet 8) Vitamins These methods also work very well in preventing varicose veins.

If you have varicose veins, it is necessary to seek medical advice. Your health practitioner will advise you of treatment options and will assist you in the care of your condition.

Aromatherapy This is an excellent choice amongst the natural treatment for varicose veins, as the oils can help with the swelling that may occur with varicose veins. Massaging the area around the veins with certain oils, can help reduce the size of the veins as well as reduce swelling.

By maintaining a healthy lifestyle, you can also prevent varicose veins from occurring in the first place. Always make sure that you maintain a healthy diet which will promote general health and wellbeing for your whole body.

Vitamins Vitamins are important elements in preventing and treating Varicose+Veins' target=_blank>varicose veins. They are more effective when used in addition to other treatments such as compression stockings. Although natural supplements are not often known to have ill effects, especially those available for mass distribution, some have been found to interact badly with other medications. So, if you do decide to have surgery after all, for your varicose veins, you need to let your doctor know about any supplements that you are currently taking.

Hydrotherapy Alternating between hot and cold baths can help with the blood circulation. This is another one of the best natural remedies for varicose veins as damaged veins are normally associated with bad circulation. It is generally easy to do this treatment at home.

Usually diagnosis is simply a case of visual observation but sometimes a procedure called phlebography is used. This is a painless procedure in which a solution called a radio-opaque contrast medium is introduced into the bloodstream. Imaging of the veins is then carried out to detect the abnormalities in the blood flow and venous pressure.

In the 1960's I learned that I have a bad reaction to tetracycline, the wonder drug antibiotic, about the third time it was prescribed, and to 'geocyllin', one of the penicillin family, but not to any of the other family members. It sort of felt like a huge black hole in the middle of my gut with a general feeling of extreme malaise. The Doctors decided this was an allergic reaction as it was repeated exactly several times.

To go along with these supplements, you need to both live a healthy lifestyle, including regular exercise, and eat a healthy diet. Improved digestion is likely the very first step to better health and especially if you use or have used antibiotics you need to re-infuse your beneficial body flora and fauna ' those enzymes absolutely essential to good digestion, proper nutritional absorption and good health. One of the best ways to do this is by using an organic greens supplement.

BILBERRY Bilberry, or Vaccinium myrtillus (Latin), is made from a small, blue berry that has been used medicinally for hundreds of years. bilberries have powerful anti-inflammatory and antioxidant qualities. Bilberry has traditionally been used to treat diarrhea, varicose veins, mucous membrane inflammation, and hardening of the arteries (atherosclerosis). It has also been shown to be particularly beneficial to the health of the eyes.

In 1968 I played Santa at Christmas for a few close friends and their families. It was a fun thing to do and I sort of fell in the Santa mode around Christmas time many years.

Bilberry extract called Vaccinium Myrtillus Anthocyanoside (VMA) is a popular treatment for chronic venous insufficiency, a condition characterized by swelling, varicose veins, pain, itching, and skin ulcers in the legs. It might also prove to be an effective treatment for Raynaud's disease, a condition that causes numbness and pain in the outer extremities (fingers, toes, nose) upon exposure to the cold--the anti-inflammatory properties of Bilberry help reduce the stress on capillaries, and relax small blood vessels, which helps keep the blood flowing to all parts of the body. Because Bilberry strengthens the capillaries, it is also used to discourage bruising. Bilberry has long been used to ease gastrointestinal discomfort.

Natural Care For Varicose Veins By Dr. Rita Louise Our circulatory system is made up of a complex web of arteries and veins. Our arteries carry oxygen rich blood to the cells of our bodies, while the veins are designed to pump oxygen poor blood back to the heart. This is accomplished through a series of one-way valves that do not allow blood to flow backwards into the vein. When someone...

Varicose veins are enlarged veins that are swollen and raised above the surface of the skin. Veins have leaflet valves to prevent blood from flowing backwards (retrograde). Leg muscles pump the veins to return blood to the heart. Large varicose veins can cause aching and feelings of fatigue as well as skin changes like rashes, redness, and sores.
